I have been dreading Autumn for some time now. I am an Arizona girl, and we Arizona girls just don’t like the cold. We like heat that makes the air thick and hard to breathe. We like sun that makes you squint and pavement warm enough to curl up and take a nap on. And this Utah summer was absolutely lovely–so mild and green, with the occasional warm summer storm sweeping through. It was perhaps the best summer weather I have ever experienced, because let’s face it, Arizona summers aren’t exactly enviable (the other nine months though, is another story. Don’t even get me started on winter break in Arizona. White Christmases are overrated.) I don’t even have a problem with Autumn itself, but with the fact that Autumn keeps bad company. He is always closely followed by his good friend Winter, whom I don’t happen to like at all.
But the last two days I’ve been able to taste the Autumn in the air and it isn’t as horrible as I expected. Instead, it’s rather cozy and nostalgic. The air is just so crisp, like biting into a not-quite-ripe Granny Smith apple; and the sky is this gorgeous blue that you always appreciate more after summer has past and the sky won’t feel warm for much longer. The leaves haven’t really started to change yet and it’s not that chilly, so I can’t quite quantify what exactly is going on in my system, but my body KNOWS autumn is coming (already here?) and it doesn’t have a problem with it. So I’m just happy to be happy about something I couldn’t control in the first place.
I guess what I’m saying is, Welcome Fall! Stay as long as you like (and if you happen to stop keeping company with Winter, and become friends with Spring instead, I wouldn’t complain).
